Cumberland County Fair
Sugarhouse - 2017
It's a Wrap!

Cumberland Fair 2017 -  what an amazing week!  With sincere thanks to all of the members who gave up their precious time to come to the sugarhouse and do what needed to be done - before, during and after the fair!   The sugarhouse experienced a 'first' this year . . .  A/C in the back room!  Temperatures were extraordinarily high from Sunday through Wednesday and so to protect the product (melted candy would not have been pretty!), an A/C was brought in.  It's a great marketing strategy as folks come to stay a while in the cool and just can't help mulling around to find their favorite maple treat :)

Needless to say, ice cream was a huge hit, though maple cotton candy still reigns as the fair-goer's #1 choice!  Shain's of Maine vanilla ice cream topped with maple syrup just flew out the door, despite a small price increase.  When evenings cooled down, organic Maple Coffee from local coffee maker Wicked Joe's began to heat up!  These two local partner companies have certainly helped us keep the crowds coming in!

Friday was Maple Day and, as always, was well-attended all day.  Sampling into the evening as well as on Saturday really helped to move product.  If you haven't been by the sugarhouse lately, stop by and check out it's new face.  The construction crew was awesome and their work has made a huge difference in the presentation of the sugarhouse as well as tightening it up in the front.

Thank you again to all of our members and members' families who helped to make 2017 another successful year!

SMMSA operates a fully functional sugarhouse at the Cumberland Fairgrounds. It is becoming a destination exhibit at the Fair where the public can learn more about how we do what we do, taste maple cotton candy and maple syrup over ice cream, and purchase maple syrup as well as an array of products made with maple syrup.

Full members have the opportunity to consign maple syrup and value-added products to the sugarhouse - this is a great opportunity to market your sugarhouse to a potentially new audience.  By displaying a variety of products, we are promoting what can be done with maple.  Consignors return 10% of their sales to the association and commit to staffing the sugarhouse during the week.  We also look forward to help from others who are not consigning but are willing to spend some time with us.  This helps to ensure the sugarhouse is properly staffed.  Sharing information, insight, and a love of maple with the public gets people excited about all that maple has to offer  -  it's fun!

Field Trip Day is Monday when  we typically entertain about 1200 kids. They are typically on an information scavenger hunt so are full of questions!  Tuesday is Senior Citizen Day and Wednesday also sees a lot of kids since they have ½ price midway tickets that day. Friday is Maple Day at the sugarhouse - this is a full day of demonstrations and sampling.  It is guaranteed to be well-attended and busy.
